The Brief
To use illustration and book design to create awareness and empathy towards the refugee crisis. Also, to understand my position as an outsider looking in on the issue, and how this can influence and transform the work.

The Approach
The book design was based around differences in perception surrounding the refugee crisis through hidden flaps that can be interacted with by the viewer. The book includes illustration of the poem ‘Home’ by Warsan Shire.

The Impact

  • Showing the contrasting experiences: the viewer versus the insider

  • Using illustration to communicate symbolism and meaning within poety through combining illustration and typography.

  • A book that serves as an experience, allowing the viewer to gain a more intimate and personal experience of current social issues.
